Eagle Cap Wilderness Trail Information



Trail Locations & Details

Bear Creek Trailhead - Approximately 8 miles south of Wallowa, Oregon, on Forest Road #8250 and then on to Forest Road #040, last 7 miles gravel. This trailhead is located just past Boundary Campground, which has 9 camp units, restrooms, and picnic tables. At the trailhead you'll find stock water, hitch rails, loading ramp, and self-service fee station. If you are camping with stock in Boundary Campground you must use a campsite WEST of the road.


Bearwallow Trailhead - Located 27 miles west of Enterprise, OR, on State Highway #82. Turn left at the Fish Hatchery onto the Big Canyon Road, Forest Road #8270 and then onto Forest Road #050, travel approximately 16 miles to the trailhead. This is a gravel road and can be rough after the spring thaw. There is a loading ramp, hitch rails, and one restroom. A large number of hunters use this trailhead in the late summer and fall. No NW Forest Pass needed.


Main Eagle Trailhead and Boulder Park Campground - Located approximately 21.5 miles southeast of Union, OR. From Union follow State Highway #203 to Medical Springs, turn left on Forest Road #70 and travel approximately 2 miles to the junction of Forest Road #70 and Forest Road #67. Follow Forest Road #67 for approximately 16 miles until you reach the #7750 junction and take a left, drive approximately 3.5 miles to Boulder Park.


Main Eagle Trailhead - Located approximately 28 miles southeast of Union, OR. The trailhead is two miles down the road from Two Color Campground.


Bowman/Frances Lake Trailhead - Located approximately 14 miles south of Lostine, OR, off of State Highway #82.  Turn south on County Road #551, which leads to Forest Road #821 (last 7 miles gravel). This trailhead has stock water, hitch rails, loading ramps, and self-serve fee station.


Buck Creek Trailhead - Located approximately 19 miles southeast of Union, OR Follow State Highway #203 from Union and turn left on to Forest Road #7785, travel approximately 3 miles. Turn right onto Forest Road #7787 which leads to the Buck Creek Trailhead.


Catherine Creek Trailhead - Located approximately 16 miles southeast of Union, OR, on State Highway 203 and then turn left onto County Road #141 which leads to Forest Road #7785. The trailhead has picnic tables, restrooms, stock water, hitch rails, and an loading ramp.


Cornucopia Trailhead - Located northwest of Halfway on County Road #413. Follow County Road #413 approximately 9 miles and turn right at the "Cornucopia Wilderness Pack Station sign" and follow the road to the trailhead.


Cougar Ridge Trailhead - Located 27 miles west of Enterprise, OR, off State Highway #82. Turn left at the Fish Hatchery onto the Big Canyon road, Forest Road #8270 and travel approximately 18 miles to the trailhead. This is a gravel road and can be rough after the spring thaw. There is a loading ramp, and hitch rails. A large number of hunters use this trailhead in the late summer and fall. No NW Forest Pass needed.


East Eagle Trailhead - Located approximately 34 miles northwest of Richland, OR, on Forest Road #7735. Take a left on Forest Road #77 and then a right on Forest Road #7745 which leads to the trailhead. Primitive camping.


Fish Lake Trailhead - Approximately 21 miles north of Halfway, OR, on County Road #1005, travel approximately 3 miles and then onto County Road #999 which leads to Forest Road #66. The trailhead has a loading ramp, hitch rails, and one picnic table. Fish Lake Campground is approximately 1/2 miles from the trailhead.


Huckleberry Trailhead - Approximately 10 miles south of Wallowa, Oregon, on Forest Road #8250 and then on to Forest Road #160. Turn right on #160 and follow it to the trailhead which is located just past the junction. Park at the trailhead and ride or hike along road #160 to the trailhead which is approximately one-fourth mile away. This is a primitive trailhead with a bulletin board, a permit box, and one hitch rail. No NW Forest Pass needed.


Hurricane Creek Trailhead -
Located approximately 5 miles west of Joseph, Oregon, follow County Road #774, turn left just past the Hurricane Creek Grange onto County Road #521 which turns into Forest Road #8205. This trailhead has hitching rails, loading ramp, restroom, and a self-service fee station. The trailhead is approximately 1.5 mile from Hurricane Creek Campground.  Parking space is limited. Please obey signs and leave larger parking spaces for vehicles with stock trailers.


The video to the right is a Google Earth recreation of a 6-day, 5-night backpacking trip in the Eagle Cap Wilderness area of northeastern Oregon, including a hike to Eagle Cap itself, elevation 9,600 feet, and a cross-country hike and climb to Prospect Lake, to which there are no trails.

 

Maxwell Lake Trailhead - Located approximately 16 miles south of Lostine, OR, off of Highway 82 turn south of County Road #551, which leads to Forest Road #8210, last 9 miles gravel. The trailhead is across the road (east) of Shady Campground and has limited parking. This trailhead has hitchrails, tables, firerings, and self-service fee station.


McCully Creek Trailhead - Drive east 5.4 miles from Joseph, OR, on State Highway #350. Turn right on Tucker Down Road (County Road 633). Drive south for approximately 4.6 miles, (1 mile past the Ferguson Ridge Ski Area turnoff). Turn right on FS Road 3920-012. The trailhead is approximately .5 mi. Facilities include restroom, hitchrails, unloading ramp, and self-service fee station.


Moss Springs Trailhead - Located approximately 10 miles east of Cove, OR, on Forest Road #6220. This is a graveled road and is steep. The trailhead has a loading ramp, hitch rails, restrooms, and 6 trailer/tent sites.


Rock Springs Trailhead - Located approximately 20 miles southeast of Highway #82, between Elgin and Minam Summit on Forest Road #62. Red's Horse Ranch and the Minam Lodge are approximately 8 miles from the trailhead. No NW Forest Pass needed.


Summit Point Trailhead - From State Highway #203, take Forest Road #77, approximately 10 miles to McBride Campground and turn north on Forest Road #7715 which leads to the trailhead.


Two Pan Trailhead - Two Pan Trailhead is 17 miles south of Lostine, Oregon. Turn south off of State Highway #82 on County Road #551, which leads to Forest Road #8210, last 12 miles gravel. This trailhead also has an 8 unit campground with restrooms, stock water, hitchrails, loading ramp, and self-serve fee station. Overnight camping with stock approximately 200 yards north of the trailhead (east side of road).


Wallowa Lake Trailhead - Wallowa Lake Trailhead is 7 miles south of Joseph, Oregon at the end of State Highway #82. There are horse rentals, a State Park, restaurants, lodging, and picnic facilities within 1/2 mile of the trailhead. Outfitter Guide services are available near the trailhead. No NW Forest Pass needed.


West Eagle Trailhead - Located approximately 26 miles southeast of Union, OR. The trailhead has restrooms, hitchrails, loading ramps, picnic tables and primitive camping.


Wildlife Flat Trailhead - From La Grande, OR, travel on Highway #82 approximately 5 miles east of Minam Summit. Turn right to Wildlife Flat. If you are in a stock truck or pulling a horse trailer you will need to drive to the junction of the Minam State Park and turn your vehicle around to access this trailhead. From Enterprise, OR it is approximately 1 mile south of the Minam Store, along Highway #82 and then turn left to Wildlife Flat. You'll have to ford the river to reach the trail. No NW Forest Pass needed.
